Before You Go
Congratulations on your acceptance to an RDP Abroad Experience!
The RDP Abroad office is here to support and guide you throughout your study abroad experience. We can help prepare you for this exciting journey that will broaden your horizons and provide invaluable global perspectives.
Please keep in mind the following:
You represent RDP when participating in any RDP Abroad program, and you are required to adhere to RDP's Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy.
Ensure you formally accept your placement and complete any necessary paperwork or online forms.
Make sure that your participation aligns with your RDP program requirements.
Research Your Destination
It's important to familiarize yourself with the local customs, traditions, language and social etiquette of your destination to integrate and show respect for the host community.
When packing, check local weather patterns to prepare for any seasonal changes.
If you have any prescribed medication, please carry a sufficient supply along with a copy of your prescription.
Passports & Visas
It's essential to have the proper travel documents for your international experience.
- Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your planned return date.
- Check the specific visa requirements for the country you're visiting to determine if you require a visa to enter.
- Some countries may require additional documentation, such as proof of vaccination, financial stability, or an acceptance letter from your host institution.
Travel Insurance
All participants in the RDP Abroad program must have valid travel health insurance for the entire duration of their experience. Please ensure that you thoroughly read and comprehend your policy before embarking on your journey.
You should verify if your existing health insurance covers international travel. If it doesn't, you should purchase a policy that provides comprehensive coverage, including emergency health and dental medical services.
Travel insurance that includes coverage for trip cancellations, lost luggage, and other travel-related incidents is optional.
Safety, Security & Risk Management
Your safety and security are always top priority.
RDP Abroad participants must register with the Registry of Canadians Abroad before leaving Canada. In the event of an emergency, this information will be used by the Canadian Government to contact you and provide the necessary support.
For up-to-date safety and security information about your destination country, visit the Government of Canada's Travel Advice and Advisories website.
