RDP Celebrates Faculty & Staff at 2024 Awards of Excellence

Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) will recognize employees who have made extraordinary contributions serving students, the institution and communities over the past year at the 2024 Awards of Excellence.   

The Awards of Excellence are given annually as formal recognition for remarkable contributions from faculty and staff that extend beyond their job requirements. These contributions may be through innovation, leadership, excellence in service or teaching, and make a positive impact at the institution, in communities or in their profession.   

This year, there were 34 RDP nominations in six categories:   

Innovation

Jennifer Dornstauder, Engineering Technical Lead, has consistently explored creative ways to enhance manufacturing designs in RDP’s Centre for Innovation in Manufacturing-Technology Access Centre (CIM-TAC). In addition to being a role model to students, she has helped to enrich the teaching, learning and applied research opportunities at the Polytechnic.  

As a respected Design and Fabrication Lab Technician, Blair Foster has helped to create enhanced prototypes in the CIM-TAC, advancing the Polytechnic’s applied research and manufacturing capacity. His expertise, positive demeanour and ability to teach have provided valuable mentorship to students and colleagues, enhancing innovation and opportunities at RDP.  

Leanne LaBrash, Training Development Lead, has explored the development of new programs in RDP’s Continuing Education and Corporate Training. This has helped Red Deer Polytechnic remain at the forefront of innovative education and community development opportunities.  

As an engaging English Literature and Language instructor, Dr. Jessica Legacy has cultivated dynamic learning environments at the Polytechnic. Her creative approach to classroom pedagogy has contributed to student development and success.  

Leadership

Dean Bye, Electrical and Alternative Energy Lab Technician, has demonstrated inspirational leadership in the School of Trades and Technology, Division of Applied Research and across the Polytechnic community. As a contact for the Data Sharing Alliance in RDP’s Energy Innovation Centre (EIC), Dean has played an important role in the Polytechnic’s growing industry partnerships and applied research.  

David Pye, Dean of School of Trades and Technology, has helped to position the Polytechnic at the forefront of progressive educational practices in skilled trades. With David’s guidance, RDP apprentices have continued to perform well at Skills Canada provincial and national competitions, contributing to the culture of excellence within the Polytechnic’s skilled trades programming.  

As an enthusiastic Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship instructor, Gilbert Renaud has enhanced the learning experiences of RDP apprentices, helping them prepare for the workforce. He has also been an advocate for Red Deer Polytechnic’s skilled trades programming at Open Houses, conventions and in communities.

Sarah Ritten, Manager of Campus Health and Wellbeing Services, has demonstrated compassionate leadership, enhancing services and supports for students and employees. Sarah has been involved in the organization of several health-related initiatives at the Polytechnic, including Breast Cancer Awareness, Movember and Nutrition month.  

With the ability to effectively collaborate, Trent Rix, Director of Ancillary and Sport Services, has played a key role in the completion of several capital projects on campus. This has included Studio Residence and the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, increasing academic, well-being and sustainable living opportunities.  

As a dedicated Sociology instructor, Dr. Krista Robson has exemplified exceptional leadership and an unwavering commitment to amplify learning and applied research at RDP. She has played an integral role in forging community connections and creating unique learning opportunities for students.  

Service

Ben Allan, Business Development Specialist, has provided remarkable service and a commitment to excellence in RDP’s CIM-TAC. He has contributed to the exponential growth of the Data Sharing Alliance, growing applied research, industry connections and innovation. 

With an elevated level of expertise, Eryn Beddoes, Project Manager – Facility Infrastructure and Engineering in Campus Management, has enthusiastically collaborated with stakeholders to help fulfill the Polytechnic’s sustainability priorities. Eryn has helped RDP move closer toward becoming a net zero energy institution through various initiatives, including the integration of renewable energy into projects.  

Dr. Brent Galloway, Education instructor, has provided RDP’s Education students with the knowledge, skills and enhanced experiences to make an impact in the classroom and academic communities. He has created a student professional development program to help prepare learners for the teaching profession.  

As Program Coordinator, Leanne LaBrash has made a vast impact in Continuing Education and Corporate Training through her insightful and innovative service. Leanne has spearheaded two fully customized non-credit IT Diploma programs that have provided hundreds of students with growing career opportunities.  

Amanda Paradis, Academic Administrative Officer in the School of Trades and Technology, has provided exceptional service to students, colleagues and external stakeholders. She has enthusiastically participated in many initiatives, such as Skills Try-A-Trade, that enhance the student experience on campus.

Cassidy Pierce, Associate Program Coordinator, has contributed to a welcoming and inclusive environment in Continuing Education and Corporate Training. She has played an integral role in the growth and success of two IT Diplomas. Cassidy has also demonstrated leadership, mentoring new colleagues and helping them succeed.  

With a commitment to fostering an inclusive environment, Sarah Ritten, Manager of Campus Health and Wellbeing Services, has researched best practices, ensuring that the Polytechnic remains at the forefront of healthy working and learning environments. She has also worked to identify and enhance wellbeing supports for students. 

Trent Rix, Director of Ancillary and Sport Services, has contributed to the successful planning and operation of several local, provincial and national events on campus. Through his tremendous work ethic and positive demeanour, Trent has contributed to RDP’s positive reputation across Alberta and beyond.  

As a skilled Academic Tutor in Writing, Jen Stange has helped RDP students advance their writing skills and confidence. She has pursued professional development opportunities, seeking the latest resources and methodologies to increase her impact further. Jen’s kindness, professionalism and sincerity have benefited students and the entire Polytechnic community.  

Nigel Stuart, Physics Laboratory Technologist, has helped to transform the student learning experience through his engaging, innovative and technology-infused labs. He has incorporated interactive lab exercises that simulate real-world geological phenomena, such as rock analysis.  

Teaching

Megan Bylsma, Art History and Animation History instructor, has demonstrated impactful teaching practices and mentorship, helping RDP students reach their full potential. She has created dynamic academic environments, incorporating gamified learning activities and historical scenario games. Megan’s innovative teaching methods have inspired a culture of creativity across academic disciplines.  

Patrick Conner, Math instructor, has designed interactive and engaging learning environments for students, which have included the innovative use of math labs. Patrick has helped to create Math Fair, providing opportunities for RDP’s Education students to invent math games and interact with middle school students across Red Deer.  

With a commitment to student-centric learning, Brandon DeJong, Philosophy instructor, has exhibited teaching excellence and a commitment to elevating experiences and opportunities for students. While encouraging meaningful discussions and collaboration in the classroom, Brandon has also volunteered for several RDP events, including Philosophers Café and World Religions Conference.  

Grace Taylor Memorial Award of Excellence 

Instituted in 1987, the Grace Taylor Memorial Award of Excellence is awarded to a support staff member who embodies competence, humour, kindness, patience and understanding. This award is in remembrance of Grace Taylor, a valued employee.

Will Cabutotan has displayed enthusiasm, talent and a welcoming demeanour in his role as Program Assistant in the School of Health and Wellness. His competence in the provision of administrative practices has ensured the Polytechnic’s Licensed Practical Nurse program runs effectively. 

With a diverse skillset, Nicole Dawe, Accounts Payable Technician, has contributed to the efficiency and positive culture in RDP’s Finance Department. Nicole has demonstrated kindness and thoughtfulness, helping to organize celebrations to recognize the workplace milestones of her colleagues.  

Lindsay Gustafson, Simulation Technician, has been a key member of RDP’s School of Health and Wellness, providing compassion, expertise and insight. Lindsay has become well-versed in the Noelle birthing patient simulator mannequin, helping to educate and train students for rewarding careers in health care.  

Catherine Lilly, Administrative Officer and Project Coordinator, has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication to serving the needs of learners and the RDP community. She has played an integral role in adopting efficient administrative functions within the Office of the Registrar.  

As Operations Coordinator, Tyrell Wesenberg has showcased expertise and professionalism, making positive contributions to the Centres for Manufacturing and Energy Innovation, RDP and communities. With patience and kindness, Tyrell has made significant efforts to ensure his colleagues feel supported and valued. 

Vicki Mix Administrative Excellence Award 

The Vicki Mix Administrative Excellence Award is awarded to a support staff member who performs their duties in an exceptional fashion, demonstrates a commitment to personal and professional growth, cooperates with colleagues across RDP and fosters positive relationships with coworkers. This award is in remembrance of Vicki Mix, a dedicated employee.

Shane Bos, Scheduling Coordinator, has exhibited extraordinary determination, patience and skill in the Office of the Registrar. Shane has been adept at finding creative and effective solutions to scheduling challenges. His friendly and positive demeanour has been a tremendous asset to his team and entire Polytechnic community.  

With a commitment to the success and growth of the Polytechnic, Rob Chilcott, Facilities Associate, has helped to increase the efficiencies of Campus Management and Red Deer Polytechnic. Rob has demonstrated kindness and a wonderful sense of humour in his daily interactions. His ability to connect with others has helped to increase collaboration with colleagues and stakeholders. 

Nicole Dawe, Accounts Payable Technician, has exhibited careful attention to detail, which is imperative to the success of the Polytechnic’s Finance Department.  She has effectively collaborated with colleagues across Red Deer Polytechnic, displaying a sense of humour and understanding in her daily interactions.

In her role as Administrative Officer, Raelene Johnson has consistently showcased exceptional attention to detail, organization and outstanding work in Continuing Education and Corporate Training. Raelene has helped to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for students, colleagues and stakeholders. She has also demonstrated a commitment to personal and professional development. 

Brianne Nettelfield has displayed expertise and professionalism in her role as Development Consultant in the Career Education and Experience Development (CEED) Centre. She has contributed to the success of RDP’s Career and Education Expo and Future of Work Event. In addition, Brianne has also organized health and wellness opportunities for faculty and staff.  

Keleish Walkine, Operations Coordinator, has performed her duties with confidence while seeking ways to expand her knowledge and skills. She has been invaluable in the onboarding process for new employees within the School of Health and Wellness, providing exceptional kindness, mentorship and support. 

The 2024 Awards of Excellence will be held for the nominees at RDP on August 28.
