Members representing Red Deer Polytechnic’s Queens Volleyball teams, from 1981 to 1989, celebrated their induction into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame at a ceremony held on June 7, 2025 in Red Deer.

The Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Queens Volleyball program (1981–1989) has been honoured for its legacy of excellence, unwavering dedication and profound impact on Alberta and Canada’s sports landscape. On June 7, the RDP Queens Volleyball team (1981-1989), was officially inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame—a prestigious recognition of their unparalleled achievements.

Dominating Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Volleyball from 1981 to 1989, the Queens set an exceptional standard with a stunning 178–5 regular-season record. Their reign included three undefeated seasons and an astonishing 90-set winning streak, cementing their legacy as one of the most formidable collegiate teams in Canadian history.

“We are extremely proud of the student-athletes, coaches and staff who contributed to the unmatched success of the RDP Queens Volleyball program in the 1980’s,” says Randy Stewart, Manager, Athletics and Student Life, Red Deer Polytechnic. “With eight consecutive ACAC Championships and eight national medals, they continue to inspire current RDP student-athletes to seek excellence in the classroom, during competition and as leaders in our communities.”

The Queens’ success on the national stage was equally remarkable, capturing Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) gold in 1984, five CCAA silver medals and two national bronze medals—including one bronze when they hosted the 1987 national championship.

Beyond their legendary play during the 1980s, Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Volleyball has remained an elite program, amassing a total of three CCAA National Championships and 20 ACAC Championships to date. Most recently, the Queens continued their winning tradition by claiming the 2022 ACAC Championship held at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

In 2025, the 1981-1989 RDP Queens are among 14 inductees, including six-time Olympic medalist Clara Hughes, into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame. This induction into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame is a testament to the Queens’ lasting impact on collegiate volleyball, their unwavering pursuit of excellence and their role in shaping the future of the sport.

RDP Athletics Recap This past week, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Volleyball team won gold at the ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship. The Queens Volleyball team sealed bronze in Camrose. The Kings and Queens Hockey teams wrapped up regular season competition with back-to-back victories. The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Futsal squad qualified for the ACAC Championship. The Queens Futsal team missed the postseason. ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship | Lakeland College | February 20-22 The RDP Kings Volleyball team won its 21st gold medal at the ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship held in Lloydminster. On Thursday, the Kings opened the championship with a sweep over the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings (25-19, 25-21 and 25-13). Colby Nemeth led the Kings with 12 kills (0.526). The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings downed the host Lakeland College Rustlers in straight sets on Friday (25-20, 25-23 and 25-17), advancing to the gold medal match. Owen Langberg contributed six kills and two blocks. In Saturday’s final, the RDP Kings defeated the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks in four sets (25-23, 22-25, 25-16 and 25-18). RDP Athletics Ranks Among Top Programs in Canada

Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Athletics has been recognized as the third most successful program in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) during the past 50 years. At its recent 50th Anniversary Gala in Ottawa, the CCAA honoured the cumulative achievements of its member varsity programs for the past five decades. “We are very honoured to be recognized as one of the top performing athletics programs in the country. Our third place ranking is a testament to the legacy that was established by previous student-athletes, coaches and athletics staff,” says Randy Stewart, Manager, Athletics and Student Life. “The current student-athletes work hard to continue this tradition as they strive for excellence in the classroom, communities and during competition.” Humber College and Mount Royal University, which is now a member of U Sports, are the only two athletics programs that rank ahead of Red Deer Polytechnic from 1974 to 2024. Two current member institutions from the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) join RDP in the top ten. NAIT ranks fifth and SAIT is ninth. Golf Classic: A Swinging Success Raising $60,000 for Student Athlete Scholarships

Red Deer Polytechnic’s 60th Anniversary Golf Classic proved to be a hole-in-one, bringing together community members, staff, and partners for a day of camaraderie, competition, and charity. Held at the picturesque Red Deer Golf and Country Club on August 26, 2024, ideal weather conditions set the stage for a day filled with activities that appealed to golfers of all skill levels. The day kicked off with a breakfast courtesy of FortisAlberta, followed by opening remarks that established an upbeat atmosphere for the event. Participants eagerly awaited the shotgun start, which launched the Texas Scramble format, offering a fun and inclusive experience for all. As golfers made their way through the course, they encountered unique challenges and entertainment at various holes. One highlight was the “Hockey Putt Playoff” on Hole 2, where participants used a hockey stick to sink their putt, vying for a special prize. The excitement continued on Hole 15, where players had a thrilling opportunity to win a $35,000 cash prize for the first hole-in-one, sponsored by Beyond Insurance.
