Alberta Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony held at Red Deer Polytechnic
The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame celebrated its Class of 2023 at an induction ceremony in Red Deer Polytechnic’s (RDP) Cenovus Energy Learning Common on May 26.
“I want to congratulate all inductees on their achievements, which have positively impacted athletics and communities in Alberta and beyond,” says Richard Longtin, Associate Vice President, External Relations at RDP. “We were proud to host this event on campus, engage with inductees and members of our communities and celebrate these incredible accomplishments of individuals and teams.”
The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame 2023 Inductees are:
- Wilf Brooks - Achievement Award
- Mark Stephen - Bell Memorial Award
- Dr. Marcus Dunsworth - Pioneer Award
- Allan Ferchuk, Cara Currie Hall, Lyn Radford - Multisport Builder
- Greg Peterson - Football Builder
- 1991-1994 Olds Grizzlys - Hockey Team
- Andrew Buckley - Football Athlete
- Mike Johnson - Baseball Athlete
- Helen Upperton - Bobsleigh Athlete
The 11 inductees for 2023 include Allan Ferchuk, former Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics Director and Kings Hockey Head Coach, and Lyn Radford, a previous member of Red Deer Polytechnic’s Board of Governors and contributor to the sporting community.
Ferchuk has dedicated more than 50 years to the development of post-secondary and community athletics. In addition to his leadership as RDP Athletics Director for 18 years, Ferchuk coached the Kings Hockey team for 14 years, winning three gold and two silver medals at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championships. He has embraced several athletic positions including Board Director of the 2019 Canada Winter Games - and is currently the Board Chair of Central Sport, which was formed as a legacy of the Winter Games.
Radford was a recipient of the 2019 RDP Honorary Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Degree for her unwavering commitment as a community builder and leader. She was Board Chair of the 2019 Canada Winter Games and has contributed greatly to the success of several prestigious sporting events, including the 2006 Alberta Summer Games and 2004 and 2012 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Red Deer.
