Instructor

Biography

Dr. Stephanie Powers is an analytics evangelist, promoting the use of data analytics to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of organizations. Her courses combine data visualization, technology (Python coding, ChatGPT, etc.) and the messiness of real-world business problems to help students see how their knowledge across business disciplines combine to create an efficient and effective organization.

Dr. Powers has taught or currently teaches courses in Business Intelligence and Analytics (BIA), Operations Management, Introductory Management and many other courses that include graphs and charts. Prior to joining Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP), Stephanie was a practicing Forensic Economist in Waco, Texas. She also conducted research applying econometric and Bayesian models when there is misclassification and measurement error.

At RDP, Stephanie has been mentoring faculty and staff on research and analytics techniques. Dr. Powers’ research has focused on teaching and learning, showing the impact of games and active learning on student preference and knowledge retention. Dr. Powers created a life size game of Monopoly for students to learn about business cycles. This activity won her the ACIFA Innovation in Teaching Award.

Her third-year students apply management tools to survive the zombie apocalypse. All of Dr. Powers’ courses are structured for students to live the role. Marketing research students moderate focus groups. Economics students evaluate the health of the economy to recommend policy decisions. Management students evaluate their own strengths and weaknesses as they practice being a management consultant. BIA students construct machine-learning solutions to business problems.
