Hasina Juma
Biography
Hasina Juma is the Chair of the Research Common, a central hub and inclusive resource center catering to faculty, staff, and students seeking guidance, connections, and support across various stages of their research and scholarly activities. She is passionate about teaching and guiding faculty, staff, and students to enhance their research successes. Working alongside other central areas at Red Deer Polytechnic, Hasina contributes to building a supportive research ecosystem, ensuring that researchers are equipped with the necessary resources, knowledge, and connections to thrive.
Hasina’s academic foundation began with a fascination for how workplace values are influenced by culture, which led her to pursue a double Master’s in International Communication degree rooted in the work of Dr. Geert Hofstede, a pioneer in intercultural management. Her thesis (with distinction) explored the relevance of intercultural competency for international public relations managers working in European transnational organizations, utilizing the e-Delphi method.
As an active researcher, Hasina has a strong foundation in applied and traditional research. She contributed to the European Communication Professionals Skills and Innovation (ECOPSI) Project, the largest European Union-funded strategic communication research project completed through a partnership between six prominent universities in six countries. The project explored competencies required by communication professionals in Europe across four distinct roles. Her role involved translating research findings into various knowledge venues including a self-diagnostic tool for communication professionals, academic journal articles, European communication magazine articles, and peer-reviewed conference presentations.
With 20 years of professional experience across five countries across various sectors (non-profit, consultancy, post-secondary education, and government), Hasina brings a wealth of knowledge in international and intercultural communication, organizational development, capacity building, change management and equity, diversity and inclusion. Her approach is to act as a bridge builder between groups, successfully driving them forward toward common goals.
Hasina has also received the highest honor from Indigenous leaders and commendation awards from the Government of Alberta.
